I’m surprised and delighted by Tori’s impromptu hug, but I’m not sure what to make of it. When she whispers the words, “Thank you,” near my ear, the sincerity in her tone strikes a chord with me.

Knowing there must be more to the scene I just interrupted than initial appearances implied, I say, “Tori, your heart is trying to beat its way out of your chest. What happened back there?”

“Nothing happened,” she assures me, looking reluctant as she pulls away.

I want nothing more than to wrap my arms back around her, but I force myself to refrain. I can tell there’s more to this story than she’s letting on. I give her my no-nonsense look, and it works almost immediately.

“It’s more about what almost happened. Or, rather, what I feared might happen,” she answers cryptically.

“Did he touch you?” I ask through gritted teeth.

“No,” she answers quickly.

My jaw loosens slightly, but it’s still tense when I follow up. “Did he threaten you?”

“No…” This answer isn’t as firm as the first, and it leaves me with significant doubts.

“But…” I prompt her.

“But I have the feeling that if you hadn’t shown up when you did, things might have escalated quickly.”

My fists ball at my sides as I picture that goon harming Tori. “I’ll kill him.”

I’m already turning to head upstairs to find the evil man, but Tori leaps in front of me. “No, please. Nothing happened. I promise. There’s no reason for you to make an enemy of him. He’s likely very dangerous and vindictive. Let’s just be more careful going forward and get through this charter without an inciting incident.”

Her words make sense, but they do little to ease the burning urge to throat-punch the mobster.

Fury races through my system, but some still-rational side of me knows that Tori is right. Confronting and angering the vile, vengeful man will only provoke him. The last thing I want is for him to decide he has some vendetta against Tori. Something tells me that he will stop at nothing to even the score when he feels that he has been wronged.

Tori places her cool hands on my forearms. The gesture has an instant calming effect, but I still want to wring the angry little mobster’s neck.

Tori seems to sense that she’s beginning to get through to me. In a calm, rational voice, she makes a plan. “These charter guests are bad news, but Jerry and his cronies are only on board the ship through tomorrow. Let’s set up a buddy system, so no females are in danger of being trapped alone with one of them.”

“I don’t like this,” I seethe, even as I begin to warm slightly to the idea.

As tempting as it is to throw Jerry overboard, that would not be a good career move for any of us, and it would likely put targets on my back, and more importantly, Tori’s.

“If he does anything else, he’s out of here,” I warn her.

“Absolutely,” she quickly agrees. The glimmer in her eyes makes it obvious that she knows she has won this round.
